Greetings, fellow adventurers! Taking the first step on a mental health journey is a brave act, and it’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. You’ve found your way to your safe place to heal and strategize. I’m Raven, your Geek Therapy Certified (GTC) Therapist, ready to team up with you!
If you’re wondering what happens when you roll for initiative with me for the first time, here is a breakdown of what to expect from our initial session.
The first session is primarily about forming our team and getting a clear picture of the landscape we’ll be exploring. Think of it as our campaign's Session Zero.
Getting to Know You: We’ll spend time discussing why you decided to seek counseling now. We’ll cover your current "battles"—whether you’re facing anxiety dragons, dealing with depression debuffs, feeling like an outsider, or navigating a life transition.
Identifying Goals: We'll start to identify your ultimate quest or your next level-up. What do you want to accomplish? What would success look like to you? How will you know when you are done with therapy? Your goals become our roadmap.
The Logistics: I’ll review important details like confidentiality, my availability (I offer day, evening appointments), and whether you prefer meeting in-person or online. (Have to be in the state of Alabama).
The most important thing to know is that this is a judgment free zone. You can unburden yourself without fear of critique. My approach is built on acceptance and affirmation:
Person-Centered Approach: This means you take the lead. I serve as a compassionate facilitator and supportive trainer. You are the expert on your life, and my role is to listen without judgment, acknowledge your experiences, and help you discover the solutions that actually resonate with you.
Neurodiversity-Affirming: To the ADHD/Autism squad—unite! I have specialized training in providing neurodiversity-affirming care. If you identify as neurodivergent, this is a space where your unique brain wiring is understood and celebrated, not pathologized.
LGBTQ+ Affirming: We are proudly waving the rainbow flag! I provide affirming and compassionate care for the LGBTQ+ community, ensuring a safe space for growth, healing, and self-discovery.
While we’ll discuss challenges, we’ll also immediately start focusing on your existing strengths, your super special abilities!
My goal in the first session is to start the process of helping you:
Unpack those feelings of being an outsider.
Discover the unique strengths and coping mechanisms you already possess.
Develop strategies that feel authentic and tailored to your personality and your life.
The challenges we face often mask incredible resilience. In our first session, we start shifting the perspective from "debuffs" to "powers."
Whether you're battling anxiety, seeking support for ADHD or Autism, navigating LGBTQ+ identity, or just want to level up your coping skills, I am here to be your supportive trainer.
