Greetings, fellow travelers! If you are part of the ADHD/Autism squad, or any neurodivergent community, you’ve likely spent your life feeling like the instruction manual you were given doesn't match the reality of your experience.
When seeking support, you might encounter therapy that feels like it’s trying to "fix" you. That’s where Neuro-Affirming Therapy comes in.
As a Geek Therapy Certified and neurodiversity-affirming counselor, my philosophy is simple: Your brain is wired differently, not deficiently.
Let’s unpack this critical difference and see how our quest together is shaped by the principle of affirmation.
For a long time, the dominant approach to therapy—especially for those who think or process information outside of the typical range—was based on the pathology paradigm.
In this model, neurodivergence (Autism, ADHD, etc.) is seen primarily as a set of symptoms to be minimized, masked, or eliminated so that you can better conform to neurotypical expectations.
This traditional "old quest" often leads to therapeutic goals such as:
Forcing Compliance: Working to eliminate natural self-regulation, like stimming.
Masking: Practicing forced eye contact or scripting conversations, which leads to immense mental fatigue.
Burnout: Focusing solely on productivity and suppressing innate needs, resulting in exhaustion.
While this approach might help you survive in a neurotypical world, it forces you to spend all your energy on masking instead of thriving. It is an exhausting way to live.
Neuro-Affirming Therapy is built on the Neurodiversity Paradigm, which views human brain differences as a natural, valuable form of human variation—just like differences in culture, race, or gender.
How does this fundamentally change our work together?
Old Traditional Goal: Eliminating the "symptom" (e.g., stopping stimming).
New Affirming Goal: Understanding the function of the behavior (e.g., stimming is a necessary self-regulation tool) and finding ways to safely and appropriately accommodate that need. We seek to reduce shame, not suppress your authentic self.
We recognize that the problem often lies not with your brain, but with the environment. If you struggle with executive dysfunction, the therapy isn't just about forcing you to be "more organized." It's about collaboratively designing systems, tools, and environments that work for your specific wiring.
You have unique perspectives and powerful ways of thinking that come directly from your neurodivergence. We focus on identifying and harnessing these super special abilities—things like pattern recognition, deep focus on special interests, intense compassion, or hyper-creativity. Our sessions are designed to help you leverage your strengths to tackle challenges.
For LGBTQ+ neurodivergent individuals, this intersection can feel especially isolating. Neuro-affirming care is inherently intersectional. It means creating a safe space that validates all aspects of your identity—where your gender, sexuality, and neurological differences are all seen, respected, and affirmed.
When we roll for initiative in a neuro-affirming session, here's what you can expect:
No Forced Eye Contact: If looking away helps you think, please do it. Your comfort and internal processing come first.
Stimming is Welcome: Fidget, rock, move—whatever you need to do to feel regulated and present is perfectly fine.
Focus on Burnout Recovery: We prioritize healing the fatigue that comes from years of masking. This often means boundary work and learning to say "no" to draining commitments.
Honest Feedback: If a traditional coping strategy feels impossible, we scrap it. We find solutions that truly resonate with your unique needs.
You don't need to be "fixed." You need to be understood, accepted, and empowered.
